Emergent - Missional - ChurchPlanting - Wesley

Recently, I've been following/reading after the blogs of a lot (seriously like 50 of them) of emergent church planting types largely out of curiosity about what they are trying and how it is working.

I do see a lot to admire and some to annoy. Among the things to admire is the outward focus on reaching the unchurched as well as the expectation that if you a professing Christian in a particular local body you are expected be involved in the ministry/work of the church. Among the things to annoy (speaking for myself) are the apparently required references to & meetings at Starbucks as well the the apparently required "Ryan Seacrest" hair for pastors & ministry staff. Shallow annoyances, I know. I don't want to generalize about doctrinal problems since these churches cross a wide spectrum.

Anyway, I was interested in this table collated by Keith Drury: What Would Wesley Say About The Emerging Church.

Worship

I've thinking a lot recently about worship and "worship music" recently and how the two relate. I ran across this blog entry which was really disturbing in a "truth hurts" sort of way.

Bold truth about worship (and truth hurts)

Quote of the day...

God’s Word doesn’t need our “dog and pony show” to be relevant today. We should just feel blessed that He still uses jackasses to talk! - Chris Elrod

He is fighting for you.

I think I'm the last guy in the blogging world to post this....

Pastor Randy will kill me if he sees this but I had just had this funny conversation with Chandler on the way to church about the offering.... (something like this)

Chandler: what is the difference between the pastors at our church and the volunteers who help like you and Mr. Mike?

Me: Well, the pastors work all day at the church for their job and the volunteers just help and have other jobs to make a living. That's why we give tithes and offerings to the church, so that the pastors can earn a living for their family and for the church to have money for other things.

Chandler: (with great indignation) I thought we were giving that money to the Lord!

Chandler: (with additional indignation) What does Pastor Randy do all day?

You can imagine how funny it struck me to walk into the church office two minutes later to find Pastor Randy sitting at the pencil sharpener. He was covering for the (yet to be installed) new youth pastor and was sharpening a package of pencils for a youth activity and was kind enough to flash the charming smile that won his wife's heart.
