Fiesta
We had the coolest experience Saturday evening for which I have a ton of pictures to share...
Tammy and the kids recently finished a study of Mexico and had wanted to end the unit with a fiesta with another homeschooling family we also have a bible study with. Tammy made pinatas which the kids painted and we were going to have tacos, etc.
At some point Cynthia, the other mom, called Tammy and told her that her mother-in-law had a Mexican neighbor who was willing to show the kids how real tortillas are made. We thought we would take our sour cream, lettuce, cheese and taco meat (with Taco Bell brand seasoning) over to the mother-in-law's and go next door for a little bit for a tortilla lesson.
As it turned out, we arrived to discover that Maria was preparing a whole meal for us in her very cool outdoor kitchen. We felt a little silly sharing our Tupperware container of taco meat when she pulled out her deliciously seasoned flat steak and pork chops to put on the cook-top.
We ended up spending the whole evening sitting outside at the outdoor kitchen under a huge pecan tree that was loaded with pecans eating the most delicious Mexican food I've had. I now realize that even my favorite Mexican restaurant in town (that is Mexican-owned and operated) is actually is not very authentic.
The couple, Maria and Florencio, was very sweet and generous to us. They spoke almost no English so their daughter Maritza and her boyfriend Jesse translated for us.
They have invited us back for their Christmas celebration which we are excited about.
I've got a ton more pictures on flickr: Mexican Party.
